Food Plant
Multiple Gases

In no other industrial setting is the broad scope of Manning Systems' gas detection capability more evident than in a "typical" food processing application.

Manning Systems' extensive selection of gas sensing devices offers the design consultant a "one-stop" answer to specifying compatible gas sensors that can all tie into a multi-channel Manning Readout/Alarm Panel or send a signal directly to the customer's PLC.

Sensors must be capable of withstanding temperature extremes (-50° F to 120° F+) and moisture fluctuations (cold, dry freezers to 100% RH during process washdown) and continue to operate without false trips while selectively sensing gases in the low ppm levels.

Patented ATMOS equipped® enviro-adaptive technology for gas sensors

Manning Systems electrochemical and infrared gas sensors have been engineered to accurately and reliably detect wide-ranging concentrations of toxic gases over broad ambient temperature and humidity ranges. Manning Systems offers ATMOS equipped® (Adaptive Temperature and Moisture Optimizing System) enclosures, the first enviro-adaptive technology available for gas sensors that allows seamless performance in hostile environments ranging from outdoor applications, washdown in processing plants, freezers down to -50°F, chemical plants and specialty/military testing sites. ATMOS equipped® enclosures actually sense the surrounding environments and create a controlled, mini-atmosphere inside the sensor that optimizes the air sample quality. ATMOS equipped® enclosures allow Manning Systems electrochemical and infrared sensors to automatically adapt to their environment and provide accurate and reliable performance under the harshest conditions.

The SensorCheck™ Safety Advantage

Manning Systems latest innovation is its new family of gas sensing instruments with microprocessor-based SensorCheck™ technology. The revolutionary new SensorCheck™ technology monitors Manning Systems EC-F9-NH3 ammonia sensor by testing it every 24 hours for electrical viability. If a sensor dries up or is disconnected, SensorCheck™ sends an indication that can be detected by a Manning Systems Gas Monitor or a PLC. For the new AirScan™ infrared family of sensors, every two seconds SensorCheck™ technology monitors the AirScan™ iR source and ensures that the dual channels are functioning properly. A notification signal will be transmitted if any of several performance parameters is not met. SensorCheck™ also monitors the incoming signal level from the source, as well as incoming voltage to ensure full signal strength.

Selecting the Appropriate Sensor

Selection of the appropriate sensor and enclosure is the secret of a dependable gas detection installation. Nothing can take the place of choosing the correct primary gas measurement technology. Detailed descriptions of each sensor technology characteristics and performance are found in Technology.

System Drawings

Manning Systems dedicated central alarm panels can monitor any combination of gas sensors and provide relays or 4/20 mA output to trigger key emergency control functions. We have included system drawings in PDF and CAD format for two of these models, the GM-10 (CAD / PDF) and GM-4 (CAD / PDF) to assist you in integrating them into a complete system design. The drawings include wiring layouts for a selection of electrochemical, infrared and vent line sensors, with typical output control functions and auxiliary alarm or power backup equipment.

GM-10 Monitor Adds Flexibility

The sensor list shows the flexibility of a GM-10 detailing a wide variety of areas and gases to be monitored. A more typical scenario would include a couple of freezers, production areas and coolers, dock, equipment room and, possibly, vent line sensing. Sensors for all of these can tie to a GM-10 that will display gas concentration for each sensor, plus provide options for multiple relay and/or 4/20 mA output.

Output Devices

Recently developed output devices and communications options include NO/NC Form C relays, linear 4/20 mA output, multi-channel dialer, internal trip level selector and relay plug, strobe/horn annunciation and Ethernet/Modbus communication capability and embedded web server to allow viewing of gas concentration on customer's LAN.

These drawings and specifications do not include the complete Manning Systems product offering.
