Ammonia Gas Detection

A typical ammonia detection system for a cold storage or food processing plant will consist of a central gas monitor alarm system (GM-1, GM-4, or GM-10) with sensor(s) in the engine room, vent line(s), and refrigerated rooms. We have included system drawings in PDF and CAD format for two of these models, the GM-10 ( PDF / CAD) and GM-4 (PDF / CAD) to assist you in integrating them into a complete system design. The drawings include wiring layouts for a selection of electrochemical, infrared and vent line sensors, with typical output control functions and auxiliary alarm or power backup equipment.

Engine Room Detection

In the engine room, codes and/or insurance companies usually require audio-visual indication at 50 ppm, emergency ventilation at 150 ppm, and sometimes require shutdown of all electrical equipment at a very high level (20,000 ppm or above) to prevent the possibility of an explosion.

Because the engine room is usually the most likely place for an ammonia leak, the use of two EC-F9-NH3 sensors will give valuable redundancy at this first stage of response to an ammonia leak. Tied into the GM-10, the Warning setpoints can be set at 50 ppm and the Warning relays used to trigger a horn / strobe unit. The Alarm setpoints can be set at 150 ppm and the Alarm relays used to trigger the emergency vent fan starter.

High Level Electrical Shutdown

Equipment selection for high level electrical shutdown requires the use of a different sensor as any sensor that is accurate at the low level can't go high enough, and any sensor that can go high enough will not be accurate at the low levels. The use of the IR-NH3-0/2%-N4 sensor will give a "long life, no false trip" solution to this critical application. Tied into the GM-10, the Alarm relay output can be used to shunt trip the electricity to the engine room at 20,000 ppm (2%).

Refrigerated Rooms

ATMOS equipped® – Manning Systems highly successful ATMOS (Adaptive Temperature and Moisture Optimizing System), the first enviro-adaptive technology available for gas sensors. ATMOS equipped® enclosures actually sense the surrounding environment and create a controlled mini-atmosphere inside the sensor that optimizes the air sample quality. Manning Systems electrochemical and infrared gas sensors that are ATMOS equipped® automatically adapt to environments from -50°F to 100% humidity and washdown conditions, assuring industry leading performance in the harshest environments and welcome flexibility during system installation.

In refrigerated rooms, typical requirements are audio-visual indication at 25 ppm and shutdown of liquid feed to the coil at 50 ppm. These requirements can be met (and even exceeded) using the EC-F9-NH3 sensors in each room.

Tied into the GM-10, the individual Warning relay can activate audio-visual at 25 ppm and the individual Alarm relay can be used to shutdown the liquid feed solenoid at 50 ppm. Manning Systems recommends these lower setpoints, as the electrochemical technology is accurate at these levels and operates without false trips. In these areas, ammonia should never be present, so there is no harm in taking action a little sooner than required.

Vent Line

The vent line sensors are typically used to provide audio-visual indication at the GM-10 to alert plant personnel to a release in the vent line.

If the facility can be covered with four (4) sensors or fewer, utilize the GM-4 Gas Monitor. If more than ten (10) sensors are required, simply use multiple GM-10's. The entire system can be backed up with one Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) at the Gas Monitor location to meet requirements for battery back up time and prevent any glitches from power disturbances in the facility.
